๐Ÿฉ Classic Glazed Doughnuts

๐Ÿ•’ Prep Time: 20 mins (+ 1โ€“2 hrs rising) | Cook Time: 2โ€“3 mins per batch

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Makes: About 12 doughnuts + holes

Ingredients:

For the Doughnuts:

  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1/2 cup warm milk (100โ€“110ยฐF / 38โ€“43ยฐC)

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 3 tbsp milk (or more for desired consistency)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

๐Ÿ”ธ 1. Activate Yeast:

  • In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar.

  • Stir in yeast and let sit for 5โ€“10 minutes until foamy.

๐Ÿ”ธ 2. Make the Dough:

  • Add egg, melted butter, and salt to the yeast mixture.

  • Stir in 2 cups of flour until a soft dough forms.

  • Knead on a floured surface (or with a mixer and dough hook) for 5โ€“7 minutes, adding more flour if needed, until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.

๐Ÿ”ธ 3. Let It Rise:

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

๐Ÿ”ธ 4. Cut Doughnuts:

  • Roll dough out to about 1/2-inch thick.

  • Use a doughnut cutter or two round cutters (about 3-inch and 1-inch) to cut out doughnuts and holes.

  • Re-roll scraps and repeat.

๐Ÿ”ธ 5. Second Rise:

  • Place doughnuts on a parchment-lined tray. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30โ€“40 minutes, until puffy.

๐Ÿ”ธ 6. Fry:

  • Heat 2โ€“3 inches of oil in a heavy pot to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC).

  • Fry doughnuts in batches, 1โ€“2 minutes per side, until golden brown.

  • Drain on paper towels.

๐Ÿ”ธ 7. Glaze:

  • Mix glaze ingredients in a bowl until smooth.

  • Dip warm doughnuts into glaze (one side or both), then place on a wire rack to set.

๐Ÿฌ Tips & Variations:

  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to the dough for warmth.

  • Make a chocolate glaze by adding cocoa powder or melted chocolate.

  • Let glazed doughnuts set for 10โ€“15 minutes for that perfect, slightly crackled finish.
