Classic Patty Melt Recipe

Posted on September 2, 2025

Perfect choice! A Patty Melt is a beloved American diner classic — basically a cross between a cheeseburger and a grilled cheese sandwich, with caramelized onions adding extra richness. Here’s a full recipe for you:

🥪 Classic Patty Melt Recipe

Ingredients

(Serves 2)

For the Onions:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp sugar (optional, helps caramelize faster)

For the Patties:

  • ½ lb (225g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended for juiciness)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)

For Assembly:

  • 4 slices rye bread (or sourdough/white if you prefer)

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar, American, or a mix)

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened (for grilling)

Instructions

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add butter and sliced onions. Stir to coat.

  3. Season with salt (and a pinch of sugar if using).

  4. Cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deep golden brown and caramelized. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Burger Patties

  1. Divide ground beef into two equal portions and shape into patties slightly larger than your bread slices (they’ll shrink while cooking).

  2. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  3. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat for about 3–4 minutes per side, until cooked through but still juicy.

  4. Set aside on a plate.

Step 3: Assemble the Patty Melts

  1. Lay out bread slices. On each bottom slice, place one slice of cheese.

  2. Add a burger patty, followed by caramelized onions, then another slice of cheese.

  3. Top with the second bread slice.

Step 4: Grill the Sandwich

  1. Spread softened butter on the outsides of the bread slices.

  2. Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.

  3. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook slowly, about 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Serving Suggestions

  • Slice in half and serve hot with French fries, sweet potato fries, or onion rings.

  • A side of pickles or coleslaw balances the richness.

  • Classic condiments: ketchup, mustard, or Thousand Island dressing on the side.
